Today I have been hobnobbing with Vikings.
Actual Scandinavian ones in authentic dress (if you don't count the specs and pink handbag.)
This bit of the A59 is called 'Blubberhouses'....I crossed over it on my journey to York today, in rather difficult driving conditions. I managed an un-aimed pic for you..
I met my American blogger friend the delightful 'Sid' Simpson in the lounge of her hotel in York where we sat upon cushions with umbel designs on them and exchanged gifts.
You see..I have been doing some sewing. Notice the Celtic brooch she is wearing?
(Its a pity my camera shows the lovely purple sweater as cold blue.)
We went to the Quilt Museum where we met the Vikings.
Wandered round the exhibition of whole cloth quilts and marveled at the building.
Strolled around York enjoying the atmosphere.
No visit to York is complete without tea at 'Bettys.'
Today's special was rhubarb crumble tart.
Delicious. (Are there too many pictures of food on my blog?)
Tea tastes much better from delicate china cups and silver teapots.
There is always a queue down the street but its definitely worth the wait.
Its so genteel in there.
Great for my favourite sport..people watching.
The waitress was a little bit too much like Uriah Heap though.
I drove home in the dark.
The worst bit of the journey was the last mile and a half. The road into our village had two inches of snow over it and I was the first car.
That reminds me..I am so enjoying the Winter Olympics.
Can't wait for the half pipe.

Yipes! What a treacherous looking road. I am glad you were rewarded with a wonderful afternoon visit at the end of such a journey!
Never...too many...pictures...
of food!!! :)
Sounds like a great tea party through driving on a snowy road after dark would have made me rather nervous.
A well deserved day out - glad you got home safely and, no, there are never too many pictures of food!
Yummmy brooch, yummy looking tea, I hope you bought home a fat rascal for later? xx
Nah! One can never have too many pics of food on the blog! The more, the betterer I say! Even have some on mine a the mo. lol.
Oh and isn't people watching one of the best past times?
I LOVE York - we used to go often when we lived in the north. But I know that Blubberhouses road, and in the snow it must have been scary! Sounds like such a nice day out ....
Great Viking costume - very practical as well as attractive. I didn't like the look of those driving conditions. The Celtic brooch is beautiful. I love York but sadly didn't get to Betty's - I do like proper tea shops - and can you have too many pictures of food?!! Glad you got home safely. We had to cancel our day out yesterday because of the snow.
Sounds like the hazardous journey was worth it. Gorgeous brooch. I have never been to York but when I do I will look out for Betty's
Hello..how are you?
Yuk, can't believe how much snow you're having this year...quite the opposite here it's 25 degrees today!!like a summers day..we really are supposed to be having rain and cold weather this month..no, I'm not rubbing it in!
My son's partner comes from York, I'll have to ask her if she's ever been to Betty's..i fancy a nice cuppa now .take care x
Uriah Heep? NARF!!!!
'Umble and obsequious like the original or noisy like the band? :}
very brave of you venturing past those huge golf balls in this weather!
Rhubarb crumble tart at Betty's. What could be nicer, except perhaps if you could have transported that umbel sofa in there to sit on.
Sid's brooch is as stunning as mine.
I'm glad you had such a lovely day x
I'm with Heather - never too many pictures of food. Betty's is a real treat. You were brave driving over to Yorkshie and back considering the icy conditions first thing this morning! Still it all sounds like it was well worth it.
The road looks a bit bleak!! Glad you got home safely, Jackie.
I'm paying a short visit to York soon - for the first time ever. The Quilt Museum and Betty's - any other suggestions? Bye for now, Lesley
What a grand day out! Glad you got home unscathed. And how lovely to meet blogging friends! I do love going to York and I envy you tea at Betty's, the rhubarb crumble tart looks delish!
Oh Jackie you were so near....I would love to meet up with you again...I feel very very jealous of your friend...I have some lovely fabric and it make a lovely lining for a bag with uber large checks in blues and greens...miss you...H
That road looks a tad treacherous.
I love rhubarb! And I never get tired of looking at yummy food.
Sounds like a fantastic afternoon.
Sounds like a lovely day out. I've been to Betty's a few times when visiting York - it does feel like it's straight out of an Agatha Christie book.
In fact one of our family holidays was spent in a cottage in Blubberhouses. This year we are staying in Buckden in the Dales - can't wait. x
That's really weird - I don't know you, I read your blog. I live in Wolverhampton. I visited York for the first time in 7 years and I was probably in Betty's at the same time as you. What a web!
Nothing to do with this post ^^ but I wanted to say I saw the article in Quilting Arts, and loved your work so much, the gorgeous colours, and the beautiful, joyful random spontaneity of it, that I had to have a go, and made some postcards following your tutorial.
I was bold...unusual for me..and used a lovely blue velvet with brown felt...am ready to play with some other colours now.
I wondered if there was more, so googled you, and hence found my way here...having a lovely cool rainy Sunday arvo in Australia reading your archives, and drooling over your wonderful work.
keep it coming
Nanette
So now.. not only am I in awe of your sewing skills....but your driving skills as well!!
Sounds like you had a fab day out; good for you! Its just the thing us girls need from time to time.....a bit of culture, gorgeous food and special friends.
X
You asked 'Are there too many pictures of food on my blog?' - answer: absolutely not! Love looking at them!
How lovely to meet up with a fellow blogger and to have such a lovely day out.
